Did you know that phasmid eggs are genuine natural works of art? They display an extraordinary variety of shapes and ornamentation, and carry considerable taxonomic importance.

This poster shows the eggs of various species discovered at the Sumak Kawsay In Situ Nature Reserve (Ecuador), as part of the ongoing New World Phasmids research project. To date we have identified more than 25 species new to science from this site.

Pseudophasma phthisicum (Linnaeus, 1758)

Did you know this was the second stick insect species ever described?

Not only that — it was one of the first animal species to receive a valid scientific name under the binomial nomenclature system we use today.

It was described by Carl Linnaeus himself as Gryllus phthisicus in 1758, in his landmark work Systema Naturae — the work that established the hierarchical classification system and binomial nomenclature that became the global standard and remains the foundation of modern taxonomy.

Today the species belongs to the genus Pseudophasma Kirby, 1896, of which it is also the type species: the species with which the genus was originally defined, fixing its name permanently and providing the diagnostic characters that define it.

Its known distribution covers French Guiana, Suriname, and northeastern Brazil.

Trychopeplus mashpiensis Conle, Valero & Hennemann, 2024

Trychopeplus is one of the most cryptic stick insect genera in existence: the spines fragment the animal's silhouette against the epiphytic mosses where it rests, until the insect becomes part of the texture of the branch.

I described it with O. Conle and F. Hennemann in 2024, from specimens we found at night in the forests of Mashpi Lodge, in the Ecuadorian Chocó. So far, it is only known from that locality.

Independent taxonomic research does not fund itself — and institutional funds do not always reach where they are needed.

Each print sold contributes to funding the scientific projects I carry out independently: those without an institution or sponsor behind them. This is not a shop model: it is a way for people who value this work to participate in it tangibly.
